To All the Ones I’ve Swiped Right Before: The Intro

Hello reader, welcome to another blog. Though this blog might not be the usual blog I’ll be writing, but this sure is one for the books. If Taylor Swift writes songs about her exes, bad bloods and what-nots to shake off, then I write about anything in poetry, and of course in this freedom wall of mine, that includes ex-friends and ex-chatmates. Which makes Tay-tay and I have a little thing in common, I guess.

Anyways you probably have the slightest idea what this is going to be about, but if you don’t, anyways I’ll still say it. Yep, this is going to be about all the people (and when I say people, this is regardless of gender) I’ve swiped right before, literally. Though all dating apps didn’t really have the swipe settings.

Actually, I was always skeptic with online dating apps (judgy to be more exact), since what first came into my mind even when I just heard the word Tinder (excuse me) was horny, perverted people. I mean don’t get me wrong that’s still a fact up ‘til now lets be real, though that doesn’t really mean everyone on Tinder, and other online dating apps are like that.

how Omegle looks like
It was quite ironic that the person who introduced me to the world of online dating apps was a former student of mine. Yep, you read that right, made me feel so Jurassic. Going back, being the judgy yet curious cat, I started exploring Omegle, where you match anonymously with random strangers, typing preferences for more chances of connecting with someone. Then the usual intro always went like “ASL?” which meant age sex and location (correct me if I’m wrong Omegle users my memory’s getting rusty) or “F or M?” which also stands for female or male. Then you also get to choose whether you wanna connect with strangers via chat or video. You get the picture.

So, I basically started a few months on that and it was a roller coaster of encounters, then I started exploring other apps like Bumble, Tantan, HER, Facebook and Tinder. I actually don’t remember the other apps I’ve explored but I sure lasted the longest in Tinder lol. And I’m quite curious still of other apps especially on how they work.

Exploring them followed a variety of virtual experiences (but not the one you’re thinking of), and I guess I’ve learned so much from all those encounters, the good and the bad. Using these apps made me realize that its not really about sex all the time, but people looking for connections, or just something to waste time with, just as I am using them to quench my thirst for curiosity and information (that usually leads to uncalled for ones) and of course, boredom (still not the one you’re thinking if you know what I mean).

I also got to connect with them outside these dating apps that I usually didn’t use like Snapchat, Discord, Telegram, Viber and there was this app that started with letter W (not WhatsApp, but I forgot) and of course Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and even Instagram, but most of them just stayed where I matched with them.

You know my mom met my dad through pen pal (no cellphones, but only mails) and when I told her about me being on online dating apps made her say I might be her karma, modern version I say. I guess this is what she meant by karma, being on dating apps for years without going on real dates—wait wait, that sounds sad, lets make it sound more interesting shall we – being on dating apps while searching for information through random connections, and getting something useful in return to write something about regardless of how long these exchanges take place. Now that sounds a whole lot better.

I’ve always wanted to write about this even when I stopped working for 2 years. Some might say I had a whole 2 years, why now? I don’t know either. I always thought of the right timing but I guess it never felt right whenever I wanted to. Maybe we can never say when no matter how much we wanna say tomorrow might not come. Now, even when time is limited, adulting and grad school is waving, but the thought of writing the 1st episode for this blog series (yes you read that right, my own, personal blog series), is just something for me to look forward to, even when it’ll take months to get posted.

Anyways, this is only the beginning. And I hope reality won’t suck me in too much before the first episode even begins. I hope you look forward with me too, but if not, I can manage lol. See you on the 1st episode (I won’t say soon though).
