Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin by Bob Ong

“Kung ano ang nakikita at naririnig natin sa araw-araw, nagiging ‘yon tayo.”

Bob Ong, a famous Filipino writer which his full pseudonym stands for Bobong Pinoy, has once again taken his readers by surprise which might come off as nonsense, yet full of wit and shade on the Philippine cinema/TV.

google.com
“Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin” is a novel written through a screenplay by Bob Ong, which has 3 parts of
parody containing different movie genres (action, mystery, horror, romance). This has a movie adaptation which I think if you have any plans watching, you should at least read the book first because the movie might just come off as plainly nonsense.

I actually don’t know how to start with this book review, because when it comes to Bob Ong, one thing I’d usually say is: JUST READ IT. Hahaha

I mentioned about it being written as a screenplay, but what those 3 parts are, it’s for you to find out hahah. For starters, you might think it’s a weird, horrific, romance novel based on its cover and is nonsensical on the first read, but actually it’s got a point with a mix of humor and sarcasm *as expected from Bob Ong*. It would really make you laugh on how he throws shade not only on Philippine TV shows/cinema, but also the society in general and more. This is one of his books that was written differently from some of his works but always with a tinge of Bob Ong’s style of writing.

I think the reason why I love Bob Ong and the need to complete his books, is because the way he writes is not something you’d find that easy in the Filipino Market. He is sarcastic, but proves that he’s got a point and all you could do is laugh and agree. He writes from experiences and plays his words in a very “Bob Ong way” and doesn’t give away of what is expected. What makes him an intellectual writer is it applies to the real world and he doesn’t sugar coat his words which makes it an epic read. If you say it this way, he real-talks.

“Pinapakita nyong mga dayuhang libro lang ang tinatangkilik ng mga tao. Higit sa mga prestihiyosong pagkilala, mas kailangan ng libro ng mga mambabasa.”

Just a thought on this, I’ve noticed that the upper shelves or shelves from top to bottom are always full of published wattpad books *I mean I’m not saying this to ruin other people’s preferences because I read wattpad in the past too*. But I think books like Bob Ong’s should be displayed more often in bookstores, labeled as best-selling because he really opens people’s eyes through his works. He gives shady discreet comments about the society including politics, youngster’s behavior, and other issues that we are still facing until now, how some Filipinos could be superficial and stupid… And I couldn’t agree more with him. Some of his works even require reading between the lines, no clichés and unpredictable, the more reason to love him. I would really recommend people, especially teenagers, to read his books, including this one.

So if you hate or dislike Philippine cinemas or movies, this is a must read, especially for those who want to understand why most Filipinos nowadays prefer watching more kdramas than what Philippine TV screens show.

“Tatawa lang sila. Tatawa lang sila at sisisihin ang sistema… ang laging bida at walang kamatayang sistema.”

So yeah, this is a 4.3 rating for me.
